All In The Family: A BU Hockey Legacy
For years, BU has created a pipeline of alumni who have gone on to become professional hockey players in the NHL. This year, things are a little special for some former players from the 1990s whose sons now play for their alma mater.

For forward Ty Amonte (CGS’19), and forward Brady Tkachuk (CGS’19), hockey and BU have always been in their blood. Amonte’s father Tony (CAS’92) played right wing for the Chicago BlackHawks and New York Rangers, among other teams throughout his professional career. Tkachuk’s father Keith (CAS’96) played for the Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues, among other teams as well.
For Amonte, skating has always been in his blood. As Amonte was learning how to skate, his father decided to place blades at the bottom of his sneakers and told him to walk around the house. With this, Amonte tells BU Today, “I could get the feel of the blades on my feet.” Now, playing for the hockey team here at BU, Amonte is able to pursue the National Championship.
When the time came for Tkachuk to decide which college to attend, BU had to be on the list of choices. In an interview with BU Today, Tkachuk talks about his college decision and says, “My dad loves BU and wanted me to play here, but he told me it was my decision. He said I should play wherever I felt comfortable.”
Now as the NCAA Tournament begins, Amonte and Tkachuk hope to help their team to victory and become national champions. For more information on Amonte and Tkachuk please visit BU Today.
