Award Program for Retired Faculty & Staff

Deadline: April 15, 2025

For many years, the University has provided funds for the BU Society of Retired Faculty and Staff to distribute awards to retirees. Anticipating funding for this program again this year, the Society is inviting proposals from eligible faculty and staff for possible 2025 awards. Awards approved will be limited to a maximum of $1,000 per individual recipient.

The purpose of the award is to provide financial assistance to retired faculty and staff for defined projects that enhance their educational, creative, and/or productive activities. The award is not to be used in lieu of salary, nor to finance any project that will generate income or profit for the applicant. The Selection Committee intends to take a wide view of appropriate projects, based both on the expected benefit of the project to the particular individual, and also as an activity that would interest other retirees.

Applicants must be listed as “retired” in the Human Resources database. This includes all faculty and staff retirees except those who are currently receiving any employment compensation from the University. The committee will attempt, whenever possible, to distribute funds equitably between faculty and staff.

Applicants should use the below online application and state (1) the nature of the project, (2) the estimated costs, including any additional funding sources, and (3) the estimated date of completion. The form will request necessary personal information and includes a free-text area to describe the project, timing, and costs. *Note: Please copy and paste your application into the provided form to ensure that your entry does not time out as you draft the response.*

Awardees should report progress on the funded project to the Society within six months of receiving the payment, providing an interim summary of how the grant money was used and whether the project had been successful. A written report describing the project and its outcome, suitable for online distribution to other retirees, will be required by April 1, 2026.

Awardees who do not start, or who cancel a project for which they received an award, must return the funds to the University.
