Networking can be defined as the process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts. Sound confusing? If so, consider networking a fancy way of saying “building relationships.” Whether we realize it or not, most of us are networking all the time. Digital networking allows us to engage with people worldwide using digital tools, thus increasing the relationships we can build and the opportunities we can find.
While the interconnections available through online communication can open doors, they can also be tricky to navigate. Check out these digital strategies to help grow your professional network and improve your career.
Networking secret #1: Find points of connections
When networking online, focus on finding people you have connections to, whether those connections have similar professional interests, are mutual friends/colleagues, go to the same academic institutions, etc.
Discover Boston University alumni with common interests by utilizing BU Connects, the online platform that connects Terriers worldwide for personal and professional networking. Using the built-in directory and messaging features on the forum, you can quickly locate and reach out to alumni for informational interviews, career questions, mentoring, and more. Another powerful resource is the LinkedIn Alumni Tool, which makes it easy to find BU alumni connections by name or company.
Networking secret #2: Craft an elevator pitch
Once you identify someone you want to contact, spend some time crafting your digital elevator pitch, which is essentially a brief professional introduction. It is important to communicate in a way that is easy to understand in a digital format, so make your first message simple to read and understand. You’ll leave a strong first impression by focusing on what you have in common with the person and why you wish to connect with them. People are competing for time, so when you reach out online, get to the point fast.

Networking secret #3: Create a digital portfolio or website
Online networking websites and resumes may not allow you to highlight all of your best professional skills. By building and sharing a personal website or digital portfolio with your online contacts, you can showcase your credentials, interests, writing abilities, graphic design skills, references, or anything that highlights the value you can bring. Be creative and don’t be afraid to show some personality!
In addition to many commercially available resources, BU provides students and alumni with free access to the Digication ePortfolio service for online publishing of academic or professional work. Alumni without an active BU email account can submit a Help Ticket to request an account. Not sure how to create your Digication ePortfolio? This Quick Start Guide breaks it down into simple steps.
Networking secret #4: Start building your network before you need it
Many people make the error of waiting to start networking until they’re looking for a job. Successful networkers know that those with the broadest network of friends, colleagues, mentors, and acquaintances are building those relationships well in advance of any immediate need. Before requesting favors from others, invest in people and gradually develop your relationships. Tend to them as you would a garden, and your network will flourish over time.
