Four tips for successful networking
The COVID-19 pandemic has limited face-to-face meetings, conferences, business card exchanges, and in-person networking events. Leaving us with one option: online networking. Introducing BU Connects—a new platform exclusively for BU Terriers! Connecting with the right people on BU Connects is easy. All you have to do is filter the networking directory by location, employment, or education. Once you’ve found a match, follow our four tips below for successful networking.
Ask for advice & information
Instead of asking directly for a job, use BU Connects to build your professional network. Ask for information that will help you develop personally and gain insight into a desired position or industry.
Be purposeful & professional
When writing a networking message, use a descriptive subject line, introduce yourself, mention the BU connection and briefly explain why you’re contacting them in particular. Be clear about the information you are looking for and avoid asking questions that can be answered by viewing their LinkedIn profile or company website. Avoid using slang, emoticons, and all-caps and always make sure you proofread for errors in your grammar, spelling, and tone.
Remember to respect a member’s preferences by reviewing the specific ways in which they have volunteered to help or offer mentorship. (Usually displayed on the left-hand side under “Willing to help” and/or “Offering mentoring”.) Maintain your personal and professional integrity in all communications by always providing accurate information.
Engage in responsible networking
If you’re meeting a mentor in-person for the first time, suggest a public place like a coffee house near their place of work. Don’t spam contacts with multiple emails, generic messages, or solicitations. Always follow the BU Connects Community Guidelines and be responsible with all members’ personal information.
Show your appreciation & follow up
Send a brief thank-you note or email after networking with a member of BU Connects. Share your experience across social media and to your BU friends and colleagues.
Members are encouraged to activate their profile by logging in via LinkedIn. Users can also create an account with their email address or BU credentials.
