BU Connects: Community guidelines

BU Connects is the official worldwide alumni network of Boston University. The platform allows current and future alumni an opportunity to leverage the full potential of BU’s global community through meaningful connections and discussions around their personal and professional networks.

To maintain the integrity and effectiveness of this shared space, we ask that all members abide by the following guiding principles.

One – Participate

All members are encouraged to bring this space to life through discussions and dialogue. Post relevant articles, ask questions or share experience and expertise. Communicate and present yourself professionally, while being courteous/respectful in all interactions (in person, in writing, by phone, video chat or email).

Two – Opportunities and insights over ads

Members are encouraged to post items including job and internship opportunities for alumni and students, industry insights on current trends, reflections on stories connected to a shared affinity, or advice and recommendations rooted in personal experience. We encourage all members to market themselves by sharing their knowledge and expertise. While introductions to your work and business are welcome, sales pitches, fundraising requests unaffiliated with Boston University, and self-promotional advertisements will be removed.

Three – Step forward, step back

Be mindful of the power of your voice and perspective. If you (or others) feel you are dominating this space, take a step back to create room for others to join the conversation. On the flip side, if you are a member unsure of how best to contribute to the conversation, begin with a simple introduction regarding who you are, what you can offer the BU community in terms of career guidance or professional advice, and the connections you are looking to make on BU Connects.

Four – Respect and responsibility

BU Connects is intended for professional networking, mentoring, and career-related conversations and learning. All discussions will be moderated to ensure content abides by these principles and all guidelines published in the BU Connects User Agreement. Posts or comments that stray from a career or professional development focus can and will be removed by platform moderators. Moderators are employed by Boston University’s Office of Alumni Relations and all questions or concerns should be emailed to alumni@bu.edu. Violations of the guidelines may result in sanctioning up to permanent dismissal from the BU Connects community.

Five – A place of belonging

Participation in industry or affinity groups is not restricted by demographics or identity. These groups are open to anyone seeking to engage in conversation with or simply learn more about members of each affinity or industry in support of the professional and personal development of all members.

Six – Keep it legal

While using BU Connects you agree that you will not:

  • Post jobs, internships, or other offers that violate, or would require an employee or intern to violate, federal, state, or local laws and regulations, involve hiring for fraudulent purposes, or require an applicant to pay fees in advance in order to apply. Note that, under the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, the University is prohibited from promoting positions that would require an employee or intern to handle cannabis products directly. Submissions to the Job or Discussion boards believed to be in violation will be removed by staff administrators.
  • Post or transmit any unlawful, fraudulent, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, profane, threatening, abusive, hateful, offensive, derogatory or otherwise objectionable information of any kind, including without limitation any transmissions constituting or encouraging conduct that would constitute a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, violate any applicable law or regulation, or damage the goodwill and reputation of Boston University
  • Post or transmit any advertisements, solicitations, chain letters, pyramid schemes, investment opportunities or commercial schemes of any kind or other unsolicited commercial communication or engage in “spamming”, “spoofing” or “flooding”

Thank you for being part of the community and we look forward to supporting your success!
