Job Opening: Head of Technical Services

Boston University School of Law Pappas Law Library is accepting applications for the position of Head of Technical Services. This position reports to the Law Library Director and supervises an excellent Technical Services Department staff of nine librarians, paraprofessionals and support staff.

Responsibilities:

The Head of Technical Services is responsible for planning, administration, and supervision of all technical services operations and procedures in the law library.  This includes the development and daily management of the law library’s print and electronic collections; processing and tracking receipt of orders in all formats including book, serial, electronic resources, microform, CD-ROM, DVD, and video; tracking and authorizing payment (approximately $1,350,000 annually) for all library acquisitions; maintaining bibliographic control of library materials using OCLC and Innovative; and overseeing the physical housing and preservation of the library’s collections.

Daily responsibilities are to plan, implement, administer, evaluate and modify policies and procedures, and integrate all functions and facilities for the Technical Services Department.  This includes acquisitions and de-acquisitions, serials control, accounting/invoice tracking, cataloging, binding, preservation, and storage activities, and includes the use of Innovative Millennium, OCLC, and other external and in house resources.  Establish priorities and goals in conjunction with the needs of the library.  Investigate, assess, recommend, and administer implementation of new and/or upgraded technologies. Insure follow-up to make certain all departmental responsibilities are carried out.

In consultation with the Director and Collection Development Committee, participate in print and electronic resources evaluations and acquisition. Coordinate resource trials, participate in licensing reviews, arrange for remote access, and serve as liaison with vendors and other university departments.  Maintain electronic resources management tracking database. With Collection Development Committee review potential cancellation of print equivalents and supervise processing of cancellations, retention evaluations and decisions, etc. to maintain accurate cataloging and records.

Coordinate overall department needs, requirements, and expectations with those of the Public Services Department in light of library-wide priorities.  Contribute to the development of overall library policies, resource allocation, long-range planning, personnel allocations and decisions, space planning, collections, and proposal formulation and review.  With other managers participate in design, planning, and updating of library’s website.  Oversee maintenance and updating of the Technical Services Department web pages.

Stay current with advances in the library profession including relevant developments with systems and technology.  Actively participate in library professional organizations through serving on committees and interest sections. Represent the Law Library at meetings.  Advise the Law Library Director on current national trends and issues affecting the library and make recommendations in light of those trends and issues. In consultation with the Law Library Director, determine and implement the library’s standards for quality of all acquisitions, serials, cataloging, collection maintenance and accounting records.

 

Requirements:

M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school. Five to seven years experience in a law library technical services department. Demonstrated technical services leadership and experience in library management. Excellent professional judgment, strong organizational ability, analytical and problem solving skills, collegial and team-oriented management style. Outstanding technical, supervisory, organizational, and communications skills. Familiarity with Innovative Millennium, OCLC, emerging technologies, and coordination within a university library system preferred.
