Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning

The Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning (CITL), based at Boston University’s College of General Studies, promotes excellence in undergraduate education by supporting undergraduate internships and research opportunities. It also offers graduate student and post-doctoral teacher training, program assessment, and various forums for professors and administrators to explore ideas about interdisciplinary education, including the online journal Impact: The Journal of the Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning and the annual summer conference, Advancing Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning. The Center’s summer institutes give lifelong learners the chance to take thematically-related interdisciplinary courses while participating in cultural events in Boston.

CITL draws on decades of successful interdisciplinary teaching at BU’s College of General Studies (CGS), a two-year undergraduate program that offers team-taught, interdisciplinary, core curriculum courses. Faculty and administrators at CGS have found that such an approach enhances students’ comprehension of the humanities, social sciences, rhetoric, and natural sciences, with material learned in one field reinforced by classes in another and students encouraged to apply classroom concepts in the real world.
