The National Institutes of Health (NIHNational Institutes of Health) issued its final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy) to promote the management and sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research.  The new policy applies to applications with receipt dates on/after January 25, 2023.  In order to provide guidelines and resources for our research community and we created a ‘Research Data Management and Sharing Working Group’, compiled of members from BMC, BUMCBoston University Medical Campus, and the Charles River campus, from areas that include information technology, research compliance, and the libraries.  This working group was charged with establishing best practices and identifying existing support and programs for data-producing researchers.

New NIH Policy on Data Management and Sharing – NOT-OD-21-013

The group is co-chaired by representatives at BU from the University Libraries, Information Services & Technology (IS&T), and the Office of Research:

  • Ashley Jester, Associate University Librarian for Research & Learning, BU Libraries
  • Wayne Gilmore, Director of Research Computing, BU Information Services & Technology
  • Suzanne Rocha, Associate Director, BU Sponsored Programs

Applications with receipt dates on/after January 25, 2023 must contain a Data Management & Sharing Plan (DMSP)

A DMSP includes the following information:

  • Data type
  • Related tools, software and/or code
  • Standards
  • Data preservation, access, and associated timelines
  • Access, distribution or reuse considerations
  • Oversight of data management and sharing

The working group has complied Data Management and Sharing Materials that are now hosted on the Research Support website, as well as a comprehensive guide to help faculty understand the requirements of the new policy for data management plans, the requirements related to data sharing and how to develop budgets related to these requirements. Questions related to these new requirements can be submitted via this online form.

The working group will be hosting a virtual information session on January 12, 2023 from 11:00am-12:00pm. To attend, please register for the virtual information session.
