Find Funding
- Technology Development is seeking pre-proposals for its Ignition Award program by Friday, November 1. The awards support research projects with commercial potential.
- The National Institutes of Health offer tips and strategies for planning and organizing your next research grant application.
Manage an Award
- Sponsored Programs has updated federal and non-federal budget templates with FY21 fringe rates and provisional FY22 fringe rates. Starting from a template saves you time compiling your proposal budget, shortens the review process, and reduces common errors. Reach out to your Sponsored Programs Research Administrator with questions.
- Department and grants administrators are encouraged to sign up for relevant upcoming trainings, including a training on sponsored research audits on Friday, November 6, and a cost share webinar on Wednesday, December 2 (Kerberos log-in required).
- Certified personnel activity reports are due to Post Award Financial Operations via effort@bu.edu by Friday, October 9.
Conduct Research
- The Office of Research continues to accept recovery plans from faculty who wish to activate their research groups or increase lab density according to current occupancy limits. Guidance is available in the Research Recovery Toolkit.
- Faculty investigators are encouraged to download, print, and post new health and safety posters for BU research laboratories. The posters include helpful reminders for lab personnel about health and safety protocols, and what to do if someone in the lab tests positive.
Bring to Market
- Industry Engagement will host two panels open to the BU community on Tuesday, September 29, and Wednesday, September 30, highlighting ways BU faculty are collaborating with industry to advance their research and solve pressing societal problems. To register, add the event to your cart on the Alumni Weekend website, and select complimentary registration at check out.
- Technology Development invites faculty, PhDs, and postdocs to apply for Spark, a three-week entrepreneurship program from the New England Innovation Corps, by Monday, October 5. The NSF-created program aims to broaden the impact of academic research through virtual discussions and the process of “customer discovery” to better understand potential customers.

- BU Initiative on Cities released its 2020 Menino Survey of Mayors, which explores mayoral views on COVID-19 recovery, policing and protests, parks and green space, and the 2020 Census.
- BU’s Institute for Sustainable Energy, Susilo Institute for Ethics in the Global Economy, and Questrom School of Business announced the joint launch of the Impact Measurement and Allocation Program, a multi-year research initiative that aims to equip investors with more meaningful environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics to measure corporate impact.
- Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities Ibram X. Kendi, History (CAS) and Director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research, has been named to Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
- Professor Suchi Gopal, Earth & Environment (CAS), was selected by Forrester Research as a key player in the climate risk management analytics market in 2020 for her work developing an investment analysis platform powered by artificial intelligence and suffused with ESG data.
- Scientists at the BU National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories have discovered a pathway that triggers deadly levels of lung inflammation at the onset of coronavirus infection, launching a search for new therapeutics to treat COVID-19.
- Assistant Professor Ben Scott, Psychological & Brain Sciences (CAS) and affiliate faculty at the Center for Systems Neuroscience, was awarded a NARSAD Young Investigator grant from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.
