From the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East to the accelerating integration of emerging technologies like AI in war-fighting—and the growing security threats posed by climate change—the international community stands at a pivotal crossroads. Grasping today’s security challenges will require researchers to rethink traditional approaches.
On one hand, scholars must grapple with the global nature of modern security issues and their implications for communities around the world. The transnational nature of migration, for example, underscores how deeply interconnected these challenges have become. On the other hand, scholars need to bridge issue areas that are typically siloed in academic and policy debates. Militaries around the world, for instance, have both contributed to the causes of climate change, and are deeply impacted by its consequences.
At Boston University, scholarship and teaching on global security are gaining momentum. This Research on Tap will showcase the breadth of faculty expertise on pressing global security issues across disciplines, schools, and colleges. The event aims to spark vital conversations and plant seeds for deeper collaboration across the BU community.

About Research on Tap
The Research on Tap series, sponsored by the BU Office of Research, brings together groups of BU researchers around important topics. At each event, 10-12 researchers present a maximum of four slides and deliver a four-minute “elevator pitch” of their work. Research on Tap events are open to faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students. Each presentation is followed by refreshments and lively discussion with colleagues and potential collaborators.
