OBJECTIVES:
The program supports career development for promising early-career researchers. The program funds five-year research and mentoring plans that significantly expand researchers’ expertise in new disciplines, methods, and content areas. The foundation supports research in two distinct focus areas:
1) Reducing Inequality: supporting studies that aim to build, test, or increase understanding of programs, policies, or practices to reduce inequality in the academic, social, behavioral, or economic outcomes of young people, especially on the basis of race, ethnicity, economic standing, language minority status, or immigrant origins.
2) Improving the Use of Research Evidence: supporting research on strategies to improve the use of research evidence in ways that benefit young people ages 5-25 in the US. The funder also welcomes descriptive studies that reveal the strategies, mechanisms, or conditions for improving research use, as well as evaluations of deliberate efforts to increase routine and beneficial uses of research in decision-making.
FUNDING INFORMATION: up to $350,000 over 5 years; 7.5% IDC
In the first 3 years of their awards, Scholars may apply for additional awards to mentor junior researchers of color.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS:
Major divisions (e.g., College of Arts and Sciences, Medical School) of an institution may nominate only one applicant each year.
Applicants must have received their terminal degree within 7 years of submitting their application; in medicine, the 7-years is dated from the completion of the first residency.
Applicants must be employed in career-ladder positions. For many applicants, this means holding a tenure-track position in a university. Applicants in other types of organizations should be in positions in which there is a pathway to advancement in a research career at the organization. The award may not be used as a postdoc fellowship.
INTERNAL SELECTION PROCESS:
Due to the allowance of one submission per major academic unit, the Office of Research will not be managing an internal submission process. Major academic units are responsible for selecting their own nominees and working with OFR to submit nominations. You may contact Joe Loftus (joloftus@bu.edu) with any questions regarding the application process or opportunity.
DEADLINES:
Sponsor Deadline: July 6, 2022 for applications; June 15, 2022 for mentor and reference letters
