Limited Submission Funding Opportunity: The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and NSF Challenge Prizes

OBJECTIVES:

The White House and the NSF have released a pair of challenges regarding DEI in STEM fields. The Office of Research and the Office of Federal relations are distributing these opportunities jointly, though only Systemic Strategies to Address Long-term Impacts of COVID-19 on DEI in STEM is institutionally limited.

The Time is Now: Advancing Equity in Science and Technology Ideation: challenge to encourage stakeholders to share ideas about how to guarantee that all Americans are able to fully participate in science and technology. It builds on a series of science equity roundtables hosted by OSTP earlier this year on topics ranging from disability to antiracism. This is a request for ideas, and not a grant competition. Submissions can include proven success stories or proposals for new approaches to advancing equity. Ideas are encouraged by Friday, November 19th.

Systemic Strategies to Address Long-term Impacts of COVID-19 on DEI in STEM: Institutions of higher education are requested to submit a 3-page narrative that describes what the college has done, or will do, to mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic on enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Submissions related to undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs, and faculty are welcome. Narratives are invited until December 30th, and cash prizes of up to $25K will be awarded to winning institutions. Please note that submissions for this competition must be submitted by a “university-wide administrator.”

Systemic Strategies to Address Long-term Impacts of COVID-19 on DEI in STEM: The submission(s) must come via the Chief Executive Officer or Chief Academic Officer of the institution. BU may submit once in each of 4 categories. All proposals for this challenge must be submitted centrally for review via InfoReady

INTERNAL SELECTION PROCESS:

Interested investigators should submit the following materials via InfoReady Review by DATE: 12/10/2021

  • Questions outlined in InfoReady Review application;
  • A draft of the three page narrative addressing one of the challenge topics. The title of this document should include the challenge category the narrative is addressing;
  • Up-to-date CV or biosketch.

A committee drawn from both campuses will review internal proposals and select nominees.
