Find Funding
- Department of Energy (DOE) Grants: With the Biden Administration’s commitment to combating climate change and supporting innovation, DOE is expected to receive significant funding in the next few years to expand its research portfolio. Join this workshop on Tuesday, September 28 to learn about current opportunities and what’s on the horizon.

ng ideas for research projects to advance sustainability at BU through Monday, September 20. - Early Career Funding: Young investigator awards provide critical support to early career faculty, often serving as a funding bridge between postdoctoral years and fully independent investigator status. These awards, however, are usually very competitive. Join this faculty panel for valuable insights on how to secure these grants from both federal and foundation sources.
- Sustainable Investing: The Impact Measurement & Allocation Program seeks to fund BU research teams exploring sustainable investing practices, and particularly ESG (environmental, social, and governance) metrics related to carbon accounting, climate risk, and human capital. Applications are accepted quarterly; the next deadline is Wednesday, September 15.
Manage an Award
- Personnel Activity Reports (PARs): Personnel activity reports for the period January through June 2021 have been distributed via email to department administrators. All PARs are due back to effort@bu.edu by Friday, October 8.
Conduct Research
- Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Protocols: As a reminder, when IBC protocols are coming up for annual review, research staff are required to submit their job risk assessments and health questionnaires to the Research and Occupational Health Program via webform.
- Clinical Trial Research: The US Food and Drug Administration has begun issuing notices of noncompliance for failure to report clinical trial results data. To learn more about registering and reporting on the clinicaltrials.gov website, please visit the FAQs here, or contact the IRB office.
- Data and Biospecimen Sharing: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is requesting feedback on sample language they have developed for use in informed consent documents for data and biospecimen sharing. NIH has established a web portal for responses, which must be received by Wednesday, September 29.

- Pitching Media: Are you looking to inform public conversation or shape scientific, cultural, policy, or intellectual agendas? This remote workshop will cover best practices for pitching, drafting, and placement for a variety of media outlets. It will also highlight how to take advantage of The Conversation, an influential outlet that publishes content exclusively from academics and researchers.
- Tell Your Story: Working on something special the world should know about? Use this form to pitch a story to The Brink, BU’s online research magazine.

- Listeners needed for research: BU’s Psychoacoustics Laboratory is seeking adults with sensorineural hearing loss or normal hearing to participate in research studies. Compensation is provided.
- Research Assistant Professor Daryl Ireland, Mission (STH), and Associate Professor Eugenio Menegon, History (CAS), received a $100K Digital Humanities Advancement Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop the China Historical Christian Database.
- Assistant Professor Jennifer Bhatnagar, Biology (CAS), and Assistant Professor Jeffrey Marlow, Biology (CAS), both received grants from the Department of Energy. Dr. Bhatnager will be studying the relationship between root and soil microbial stress metabolism and watershed biogeochemistry under rapid environmental change, while Dr. Marlow will be studying metabolic activity in salt marsh sediments.
- Professor Megan Bair-Merritt, Pediatrics (MED), received the NIH Prize for Enhancing Faculty Gender Diversity in Biomedical and Behavioral Science in recognition of her commitment to improving gender diversity and equity among University faculty.
- Professor Xin Zhang, Mechanical Engineering (ENG), was featured on the Wall Street Journal’s The Future of Everything podcast in July.
- Fraunhofer CMI – Center for Manufacturing Innovation at BU received $2.5M from the Department of Energy to develop a self-learning tool to monitor and forecast major electricity loads in homes (such as HVAC, water heating, and electric vehicles), and allow individuals and communities to better manage home energy use and minimize energy costs.
