- Dependent Care Supplement: The National Science Foundation recently issued a Dear Colleague letter drawing attention to its Career Life Balance supplements “to help [NSF-funded] researchers, who are confronted with a short-term increase in dependent care responsibilities, ensure that the research activities supported by an NSF award can continue.”
- Women-led Life Science Companies: The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center seeks applications from women-led, early-stage life science companies for its Massachusetts Next Generation Initiative through Friday, February 12. BU Technology Development is hosting an information session on the initiative on Thursday, December 10.
- Funding for Energy Research: This month the US Department of Energy launched a new portal for users to browse funding opportunities and submit applications for renewable energy and energy efficiency programs. Fiscal year 2021 applications will be submitted through the new portal, while open opportunities published prior to Monday, November 2, will be managed on the old portal, eXCHANGE. Manage an Award
- Upcoming Trainings: Department and grants administrators are encouraged to sign up for relevant trainings, including a cost share webinar on Wednesday, December 2 (Kerberos login required).
- Data Management Policy: The National Institutes of Health has released a New Policy for Data Management and Sharing, which requires investigators to submit a “data management and sharing plan” with their application and comply with the plan throughout the research process. The policy goes into effect on January 25, 2023.
- Holiday Hours: The Sponsored Programs and Post Award Financial Operations offices will be closed beginning on Thursday, December 24, at 1 pm, reopening on Monday, January 4, at 9 am, in observance of Intersession break. Staff will not be available during this time to approve or process proposals or purchase requisitions. All invoices and other items due between December 21 and January 8 must be submitted to your research administrator by Monday, December 14.

Conduct Research
- Back2BU Research: We continue to accept research recovery plans from faculty who wish to activate their research groups or increase lab density. Faculty investigators approved for on-campus research have been asked to review their current plan, post health and safety posters, and renew their agreement to uphold BU health and safety practices in their labs.
- Ordering PPE: Charles River Campus labs and clinics should place orders for personal protective equipment (PPE) for the spring semester by Friday, December 4. BU Medical Campus (BUMC) labs should continue to use the order form on the BUMC PPE supply center website.
- Safety Reporting: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) introduced a safety reporting feature in BioRAFT called ObservNow (Kerberos login required). This new tool is an easy way to bring attention to non-emergency safety issues related to COVID-19 (social distancing, face masks, etc.), trip hazards, spills, or out-of-place chemical containers.

- Event Topics: Research on Tap brings together groups of BU researchers for micro-lectures on important topics to catalyze collaboration. Suggest topics for future events by filling out this form.

- Survey for Faculty & Staff: A Campus Climate Lab-funded research team is working to quantify greenhouse gas emissions associated with BU employee air travel. BU faculty and staff are invited to fill out this survey, responses from which will be used to estimate flight emissions and better understand employee travel behavior.
- Professors Stefan Hofmann, Psychological & Brain Sciences (CAS), Catherine Klapperich, Mechanical Engineering (ENG), and Uday Pal Mechanical Engineering (ENG), were elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
- Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities Ibram X. Kendi, History (CAS) and Director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research; Professor Catherine Klapperich, Mechanical Engineering (ENG); and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Kate Walsh, Health Law, Policy & Management (SPH) and President and CEO of Boston Medical Center, were named in Boston Business Journal’s list of 50 leaders making a difference.
- Thirteen BU faculty from the College of Arts & Sciences, Questrom School of Business, the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health, and Wheelock College of Education & Human Development were named Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate.
- Professor Xin Zhang, Mechanical Engineering (ENG) and Photonics Center faculty member, Professor Stephan Anderson, Radiology (MED), and Assistant Research Professor Xiaoguang Zhao, Radiology (MED), were honored by the Boston Patent Law Association for their patent related to MRI metamaterials.
- Professor David Felson, Epidemiology (SPH), received the Lee C. Howley, Sr. Prize for Arthritis Science Service from the Arthritis Foundation.
