NIH High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant Program (S10 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

OBJECTIVES: The High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant Program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, specialized, commercially available instruments or integrated systems. The minimum award is $600,001 of direct costs. The maximum award is $2,000,000 of direct costs. Types of instruments supported include, but are not limited to: X-ray diffraction systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and confocal microscopes, cell-sorters, and biomedical imagers.

 

The HEI Program will not support requests for:

    • An instrument with a base cost of less than $600,001;
    • Multiple instruments bundled together;
    • Purely instructional equipment;
    • Institutional administrative management systems, clinical management systems, or instruments to be used purely for clinical (billable) care;
    • Software, unless it is integrated in the operation of the instrument and/or necessary for the generation of high-quality output experimental data from the instrument;
    • General purpose equipment or an assortment of instruments to furnish a research facility and equipment for routine sustaining infrastructure (such as standard machine shop equipment, standard computer networks, autoclaves, hoods, and equipment to upgrade animal facilities).

FUNDING INFORMATION: $600,001 to $2,000,000

 

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS:

 

Multiple PDs/PIs are not allowed under the S10 mechanism.

 

Eligibility Note: The number of institutional submissions in not limited, however submissions must be scientifically distinct and must include an institutional support letter. Potential applicants must submit a proposal through InfoReady to ensure there is no overlap between proposals and to facilitate institutional support letters.

 

INTERNAL SELECTION PROCESS:

Interested investigators should submit the following materials via InfoReady Review by DATE: 4/10/20

  • Questions outlined in InfoReady Review application;
  • A letter of recommendation from the appropriate department chair or dean
  • A brief statement (up to 2 pages) by the candidate describing their scientific achievements and proposed instrumentation including a description of the user base;
  • A brief budget outline for the proposal
  • Up-to-date CV or biosketch.

 

A faculty committee drawn from both campuses will review internal proposals and select nominees.
