Policy on University-Sponsored Travel for Summer 2021

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer
and Gary Nicksa, Senior Vice President for Operations

As the end of the academic year draws closer, we are writing to briefly update you on BU’s policy on University-sponsored travel for the summer 2021 term.

As you know, last spring, BU instituted restrictions on University-sponsored travel of faculty, staff, and students in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those restrictions, which limited sponsored domestic and international travel for the fall 2020 semester and winter break were kept in place for the spring 2021 semester. As vaccine distribution continues over the coming months for the US and global populations, BU will be extending the restrictions throughout the summer, until August 20, 2021.

As a reminder, these guidelines generally prohibit sponsored travel for undergraduate and graduate students, unless a student petitions for and is granted an exemption by their dean for domestic travel or the University Provost for international travel. Faculty and staff are also discouraged from sponsored travel unless granted approval by the traveler’s dean or vice president. A full text of the summer 2021 policy can be found on the Office of the Provost website.

For the fall 2021 semester, Boston University is planning to return to normal operations to the extent possible, including student, faculty, and staff travel, if the pandemic situation allows. The University will continue to monitor the global situation closely and will provide an updated travel policy by August 10, 2021 or earlier as appropriate.
