University-wide Training on Sexual Misconduct Prevention

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer,
Gary Nicksa, Senior Vice President for Operations, and
Kenneth Elmore, Associate Provost and Dean of Students

In February 2018, we announced that Boston University would implement mandatory University-wide sexual misconduct prevention training for all students, faculty, and staff. Throughout the fall, each of you received instructions for your assigned trainings, with a completion deadline of November 15, 2018. These trainings are an essential part of Boston University’s commitment to ensure that all members of our community are afforded a respectful environment in which to work, study, and live.

We want to take a moment to thank all of you who have devoted the time to complete this important training. So far, almost 80% of the University community has finished their assigned trainings. By taking part in this effort, we are better equipped to understand and prevent incidents of sexual misconduct, including harassment. Thank you for your commitment to this vital work and for your participation in making our campuses as respectful and safe as possible.

However, there remain faculty, staff, and students who have not yet completed their mandatory sexual misconduct prevention trainings despite numerous reminders and requests from supervisors or deans. Therefore, if an individual has not completed their trainings, we will implement the following steps:

  • Faculty: 2019 merit salary increases will be withheld starting in September 2019;
  • Staff: 2020 merit salary increases will be withheld starting in January 2020;
  • Undergraduate and Graduate Students: Students who were enrolled in any coursework during the 2018-2019 academic year will be unable to register for spring 2020 classes. In the future, students enrolling at BU for the first time will be unable to register for a second semester of coursework, i.e. a student beginning coursework in fall 2019 will be unable to register for spring 2020 classes.

Each of these restrictions will be removed once the required training has been completed.

Thank you once again to the many individuals who have completed their sexual misconduct prevention trainings and for your support of this important initiative.
