Announcement of the University Librarian Search Advisory Committee

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Earlier this week, I announced our intent to conduct a national search for a new Boston University Librarian. I am pleased to announce the membership of the University Librarian Search Advisory Committee below.

I would like to thank the members of the committee, in advance, for their service and give special acknowledgement to Tracy Schroeder, Vice President for Information Services & Technology, who has agreed to serve as chair.

As outlined in my memo of September 13, the selection of a new University Librarian is a vitally important step in our continual evolution as a global research institution. The individual we seek for this position will be a transformational leader charged with re-envisioning a 21st century BU Library and its capacity to advance research, scholarship, and teaching, including leveraging innovations in digital and information technology.

The search for a new University Librarian begins just as the BU Center for the Humanities sponsors a major forum this fall on emerging library technologies entitled Recording Lives: Libraries and Archives in the Digital Age. We are hopeful that the search committee will leverage this forum to spark its own University-wide conversations about the future of our library services, both in setting priorities and imagining what is possible as we work to support the research and scholarship of a new generation of scholars, students, and rising professionals.

The University Librarian Search Advisory Committee will immediately begin its work of soliciting nominations for candidates and evaluating the qualifications and strengths of nominees and applicants. I look forward to receiving the Committee’s recommendations of 2-3 qualified applicants by March 30, 2018, for final selection by President Brown and me. Please join me in thanking your colleagues engaged in this important search effort, and I urge you to contribute your ideas about the critical competencies required for the next University Librarian at librariansearch@bu.edu.
