Promotions to Full Professor

President Brown and I have completed our assessment of all dossiers for promotion to Full Professor on the Charles River Campus, and I am delighted to inform you that 12 members of our faculty have been promoted to Full Professor at Boston University.
These extraordinary faculty members demonstrate the breadth, diversity, and depth of knowledge that have, over the years, defined Boston University’s talented academic community. From the humanities and social sciences to engineering and business, these professors are all leaders in their respective fields. They are producing substantive research and scholarship each day in their classrooms and laboratories, and we are proud to count them as members of our faculty:
Tian Cao, CAS, Philosophy, specializes in the philosophy and history of science and is the author of an internationally renowned book and numerous journal articles, book chapters and monographs on quantum field theory, contemporary physics, and issues related to modernization and globalization.
Chrysanthos Dellarocas, SMG, Information Systems, specializes in social media and is a widely cited scholar in the fields of online reputation and Web 2.0. He is the author of three books and dozens of book chapters, journal articles, papers and patents relating to operating systems and computer processes.
Susan Fournier, SMG, Marketing, specializes in branding, her research exploring the creation and capture of value through branding and brand relationships. She recently co-authored the book Consumer-Brand Relationships – Theory and Practice (2012) and has received six Best Article awards for her work in branding and consumer research.
Gene Jarrett, CAS, English, specializes in African American and American literary history and race, ethnic and cultural studies. He recently authored the book Representing the Race: A New Political History of African American Literature (2011), and is the well-respected editor and coeditor of multiple volumes on African American literature and literary criticism.
Nazli Kibria, CAS, Sociology, specializes in the study of family, race and ethnicity, gender, and globalization with a focus on South Asia and the Asian American experience. She recently authored the book Muslims in Motion: Islam and National Identity in the Bangladeshi Diaspora (2011) and has written or edited numerous articles and volumes on the social effects of globalization on South Asian families and migrant workers.
Robert Marquez, SMG, Finance, specializes in corporate finance and financial intermediation and is the nationally cited author of numerous articles and papers on the corporate structures of banks, lending standards, regulatory reform and the intersection of information technology and financial services competition.
Ibrahim Matta, CAS, Computer Science, specializes in Internet and wireless architectures and protocols. The author of more than 100 journal articles and technical papers, he has received international attention for his work on traffic routing, congestion control, internetworking wired and wireless technologies, and the development of network evaluation tools.
Jerome Mertz, ENG, Biomedical Engineering, specializes in biological imaging, with a focus on the development and applications of new optical microscopy techniques. The author of the textbook, Introduction to Optical Microscopy (2010), he has written or edited dozens of field defining journal articles, technical papers and book chapters on microscopy applications.
Tibor Palfai, CAS, Psychology, specializes in the role of cognitive processes in addictive behaviors, with a focus on the origins of substance cravings and discovering new treatments for drinking problems. He is the author of numerous pioneering volumes, journal articles, and papers on the psychology behind substance addiction.
Erol Pekoz, SMG, Operations and Technology Management, specializes in areas of applied probability and statistics, using his research to develop models for congestion in operations, theory of rare events, risk management, and statistical models for health care provider profiling. The author of two seminal texts and dozens of journal articles on probability and statistics, he has received the Broderick Prize for Teaching at BU.
Martin Schmaltz, CAS, Physics, specializes in theoretical particle physics, with a focus on extracting the fundamental physics underlying the results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland. A widely respected author of dozens of papers and journal articles, he has emerged as one of the nation’s top experts in creating new hypotheses to extend the Standard Model of Particle Physics, hopefully to be tested by the LHC experiments.
David Starobinski, ENG, Electrical and Chemical Engineering, specializes in systems engineering, focusing much of his research on the modeling and analysis of communication networks, wireless networking, network economics and cyber-security. He is the author or co-author of dozens of important journal articles and papers, most recently on the evolution of wireless cellular networks.
