Mekonnen Seifu

Amharic Language Lecturer 

Mekonnen Yared Seifu is a Lecturer of Amharic at Boston University’s African Studies Center, part of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. He brings a wealth of experience to this role, having previously served as a Lecturer of Amharic and Ge’ez languages in the Harvard African Language Program since 2016. His expertise encompasses linguistics, translation, language acquisition, and the rich literary and cultural traditions of Ethiopia. A dedicated scholar, Mr. Seifu is completing his master’s degree in international relations at the University of Massachusetts Boston’s McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, expected in May 2026. He also holds a B.A. in Economics from UMass Boston and a B.A. in Business Administration from Micro Link Information Technology College in Addis Ababa.

Mekonnen Yared Seifu is originally from Ethiopia. Deeply engaged with his heritage, Mr. Seifu’s academic work is informed by his specialized knowledge of ancient Ge’ez and Amharic literature, Ethiopian traditional songs, and dance. Fluent in Amharic, Ge’ez, English, and French, he also contributes to his community as an Archdeacon for the Ethiopian OrthodoxTewahido Church. He is married and the father of three boys.
