In Real Law (IRL) is a BU Law program founded by Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig in collaboration with alumni Jamie Whitney (’94) and Robin Walker (’99). The program is designed to connect first-generation law students, LGBTQIA+, and students of color with a diverse group of highly successful attorneys practicing in Boston.
Each year, IRL hosts two to three live events where students and attorneys engage in honest, in-depth discussions about the unique challenges faced by individuals from historically underrepresented communities in the legal profession. Above all, IRL aims to introduce law students to Boston’s inclusive legal community, which embraces all identities, backgrounds, and cultures.
This event is open to students who attend Law Schools in the Boston area. In addition to BU, our attendees hail from Boston College School of Law, Northeastern Law School, New England Law, and Suffolk University Law School. Since its founding in 2018, students have consistently cited IRL as one of the most memorable and impactful programs they attended during law school.
You can learn more about the IRL program and its origins in the June 2020 story, “One Way to Level the Playing Field,” and explore the journey of our two BU Law alumni founders in “In Service of LAW.”
If you would like to attend a future IRL program or have any questions, please email Amber Woods, Associate Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Engagement, at amberfw@bu.edu.
