Minor in Mechanical Engineering

Engineering Undergraduates can complement their degree with a minor in Mechanical Engineering, one of the largest and broadest engineering disciplines, encompassing the development of a broad range of systems from specialized equipment to everyday household items.

Requirements

  • A Minor in Mechanical Engineering is earned through completion of 20 credits, all of which must be ENG ME or ENG EK301, EK335, EK408, EK481, EK505, EK546 courses, and at least 12 of which are ENG ME courses at the 300 level of higher.
  • No more than 8 credits may overlap between a student’s major and minor.
  • A student must be a Sophomore and have a declared major on record in order to apply for a minor.
  • Students are expected to obtain the necessary background (pre-requisites or equivalents) to complete their chosen minor program.
  • A student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) across all 20 credits for the minor must be 2.00 or higher to earn the minor.
  • Applications for a Minor in Mechanical Engineering must be approved by the Associate Chair of Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Programs.
  • It is recommended that students interested in pursuing a Minor in Mechanical Engineering apply as early as possible in their degree program in order to facilitate course planning, but in no case later than October 1 of a student’s senior year.

Timeline to Declare

  • Students must have a declared major on record in order to apply for the Minor in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Applications for the Minor in Mechanical Engineering must be approved by the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies of the Mechanical Engineering Department.
  • Students planning to pursue a minor in Mechanical Engineering should apply as early as possible—or by May 1 of the junior year—to facilitate course planning.
