Open Position: Electrical Engineer, Wearable Biomedical Devices
Job Title: Electrical Engineer – Wearable Biomedical Devices

Overview
We are looking for an electrical engineer to support the development of wearable near-infrared optical devices. This is a hands-on role spanning the full process from design to testing and assembly. The engineer will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to build reliable, research-grade systems for clinical and at-home use.
Summary
The Electrical Engineer will support the design and development of wearable biomedical devices for monitoring brain and physiological signals. This role includes PCB design, embedded systems, prototyping, testing, and device assembly in a collaborative research environment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, layout, and validate multi-layer PCBs, including rigid and flexible 6-layer designs with dense component placement for compact wearable systems
- Select and integrate electronic components (microcontrollers, analog front-end, LEDs, photodetectors, power systems, wireless modules)
- Develop, test, and debug embedded firmware
- Perform bench testing, signal validation, and troubleshooting (noise, stability, power) using standard lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, optical power meters, spectrometers)
- Assemble and integrate hardware systems, including probes and cabling
- Perform manual soldering, rework, and fine-pitch component modification on PCBs
- Work with free-space and fiber-based optical systems, including alignment and integration of laser-based light sources
- Support basic machining and modification of mechanical components for prototypes and test setups
- Manage PCB fabrication, BOMs, and component procurement
- Document designs, test procedures, and system performance
- Support system integration with other modalities (e.g., EEG, physiological sensors)
- Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and clinical staff to refine device performance
- Ensure designs follow applicable safety and quality guidelines for research devices
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required
- Master’s or PhD preferred
Experience
- 1–5+ years of experience in PCB design and embedded systems (level dependent)
- Experience designing multi-layer PCBs, including dense layouts and rigid-flex configurations preferred
- Experience with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCad, Eagle)
- Experience with microcontrollers and firmware development
- Strong background in analog and mixed-signal circuit design
Skills/Abilities/Competencies
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, debugging, and hardware rework
- Proficiency in manual soldering, including fine-pitch and surface-mount components
- Familiarity with optical systems (free-space and fiber-coupled, including lasers)
- Experience with standard lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, optical power meters, spectrometers)
- Basic machining skills for prototype fabrication or modification
- Understanding of low-noise and signal integrity considerations
- Ability to manage multiple design iterations and timelines
- Strong documentation and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with wearable or biomedical devices
- Familiarity with near-infrared optical systems (NIRS)
- Experience with wireless communication (BLE)
- Experience in a research or clinical environment
Working Conditions
- Laboratory and office environment
- Hands-on device assembly, optical alignment, and bench testing
- This is an on-site position; remote work is not compatible with the hands-on nature of the role
