Internships provide a valuable opportunity for hands-on experience outside their familiar academic environment, and so much more. Here’s what our Masters students have to say about their work in the field …
Red Hat
Implementation & Testing for Open Source Software
A very rewarding experience, especially collaborating with both Red Hat and partner engineers and participating in all sorts of company events. As a student without prior work experience, my ECE studies were helpful for the application process; the interviewer was particularly interested in my project for the Embedded Systems course. I also found the position, indirectly, through a BU-hosted career fair. Thanks for hosting the event!”

Hasco Vision
Embedded Software Development
This internship has laid a strong foundation for my career, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application while opening doors for future opportunities in the field. I was able to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained in college to real-world scenarios, especially in the areas of embedded systems and communication protocols. For example, I wrote a program to use UART protocol to let MLD communicate with a low noise LED matrix manager (created by Texas Instruments) to control the lamps to generate animation. The hands-on experience significantly enhanced my technical skills, particularly in C and Python programming, as well as circuit design, which are crucial for my career aspirations.”
-Hua Tong (MS’24)
Texas Instruments
Process Engineering
It was particularly valuable to learn about the semiconductor industry and the difference in roles you can get with different degrees. It also helped me create valuable connections that I hope to utilize post-PhD.”
-David Liu (MS’24)
Wake Forest University School of Medicine
Data Analysis
I was assigned to a data analysis pipeline project where I built machine learning and deep learning models to identify signs of violence or abuse in patient notes. The classes I took at BU played a crucial role in preparing me for this project! I found the internship to be an incredibly rewarding experience. It not only allowed me to apply what I had learned in a practical setting but also reinforced my passion for data analysis and machine learning. This experience provides me with hands-on experience that complements my academic background.
I found this internship through one of the ENG CDO newsletters, which I highly recommend checking regularly! Professor Osama Alshaykh gave me valuable suggestions to improve my writing, as well.”
-Shangzhao Yin (MS’24)
L’Oréal China
Data Analysis
This was a valuable opportunity to gain some first-hand business analysis experience.”
