The Engineering Commons is designed for shared use as an inclusive and communal space for the undergraduate community of the College of Engineering.

Policy Adherence
All students must follow Boston University policies in addition to the following guidelines. Violations will result in a permanent ban of future room reservation privileges.
General Use Guidelines
Noise Levels: Please understand that the area during operating hours will be used by both those wishing to work quietly and by groups who want to work together. Noise levels should be appropriate for a mixed- use facility.
Share the Space: Depending on the circumstances, The Engineering Commons reserves the right to ask that students share facilities (unreserved rooms, tables, furniture) and/or relocate within rooms to maximize use of the space.
Cleanliness: Students are required to dispose of trash, and refrain from bringing excessive personal belongings to the space. Projects or other activities must not take up excessive space or block the mobility of the common space. Any rearranged furniture must be returned to its original location.
Prohibited Activities
The following activities are prohibited in the lounge:
- Smoking and/or use of nicotine, tobacco, or marijuana products, including vaping.
- Use of personal speakers.
- Bringing bicycles inside the space (please use the exterior bicycle racks).
- Bringing pets or animals (with the exception of service animals).
- Leaving belongings unattended.
- Do not leave belongings unattended. Unattended items will be considered abandoned and may be removed or discarded.
The Engineering Commons reserves the right to limit or prohibit activities and behavior that are inconsistent with the aforementioned guidelines or otherwise disrupts the environment.
Reserving The Engineering Commons for an Event
All student-led events in The Engineering Commons must be open to all undergraduate College of Engineering students.
Requests to reserve the main room and/or side room must be submitted at least one week prior to the event via the booking page.
Only undergraduate students of the College of Engineering are permitted to submit requests.
All requests will receive email confirmation of approval or denial.
All requests must contain:
- The requester’s full name
- The requester’s email address
- The requested room
- Purpose of reservation
- Student organization affiliation (if applicable)
- Expected duration
- Number of attendees
- Whether food and/or drinks will be served
Event Setup and Clean-up
Hosts are responsible for the setting up and dismantling of the event. Hosts must dispose of trash and return furniture to its original arrangement.
Storage Units
Storage is only available to the following organizations:
- Society of Asian Scientists and Engineering (SASE)
- Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
- Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
- National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
- Engineering Student Government (ENGGOV)
Student organizations are responsible for their storage unit’s condition and will be charged for any damages.
Boston University and College of Engineering are not responsible for damage or loss of the contents of any storage unit. Student organizations must immediately report any damage or issues to the Student Desk Assistants and emailed to ecommons@bu.edu.
