Crafting Personal Statements

A personal statement provides an opportunity to share your unique story with a reader; it highlights your strengths, interests, and aspirations while supporting your statements with experiences from your personal, academic, and professional background. Your personal statement should:

  • Evaluate your unique experiences and demonstrate to the reader what motivates you.
    • Summarize your career goals: what brought you to this pursuit?
    • Use detailed examples to illustrate your points.
  • Communicate your enthusiasm to a prospective admissions office.
    • Share what you know about your program of interest and why you chose to apply: feel free to refer to the curriculum, faculty you hope to work with and learn from as well as research or para-professional opportunities the program provides.
