New Online Student Guide for Success
☑ Prepare your student account
- Access your BU email
The Department and faculty will use your BU Email address to contact you with important details regarding your program. Login to your BU Email through http://www.bu.edu/webmail/.
Email forwarding is optional and can be setup once your account has been created by going to www.bu.edu/computing/email/forwarding/.
Your Terrier Card (BU Student ID): About three weeks after the start of the term, the Office of Distance Education will mail out student ID cards (without a student photo) to online students entering a degree or certificate program. Students who are able or wish to visit the Terrier Card office in person may exchange their card for a photo imprinted Terrier Card at no cost to them.
- Review your compliance status
Prior to registering, visit the MyBU Student Portal to ensure that you are in compliance with University requirements. If you have difficulty finding your compliance information, you may find the myBU Student Navigation Quick Card helpful.
Additionally, on-campus students must provide health and immunization information as indicated in the Incoming Health Requirements section of the Student Health Services (SHS) website.
- Health & Wellness
There are several components to one’s health and wellbeing – and BU has you covered. Learn about available Health & Wellness along with BU’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
- Complete the Disability & Access Services Intake Form (if applicable)
Disability & Access Services provides services and support to ensure that students are able to access and participate in the opportunities available at Boston University. In keeping with this objective, students are expected and encouraged to contact the Office of Disability & Access Services prior to the start of classes and utilize the resources to the degree they determine necessary. Although a significant degree of independence is expected of students, Disability & Access Services is available to assist, should the need arise.
Please visit the Office of Disability & Access Services web site for further details and to fill out the intake form. You may also call 617-353-3658, or e-mail access@bu.edu.
☑ Plan your program of study
- Scheduling Guide
The MyBU Student has the official printed schedule each semester.
Degree and Certificate students should create a tentative program schedule at the start of their program using the recommended program sequences and/or the projected course schedules. Visit the Schedules page. You may also email metcsol@bu.edu for assistance.
Visit the Academic Policies & Forms section to see important Department policies as well as forms for course waivers, transfer credit, etc.
- Advising at MET CS
The Department of Computer Science has one main Academic Advisor, Andrew Gorlin. He is available to assist current students with detailed questions regarding course and program curriculum.
Department administrators are assigned by program format to assist with navigating the university. For online students, this point of contact is Michelle Trilling Younger, Senior Academic Program Administrator. Conditionally admitted students who are completing program prerequisites will work with Amy Johnson, Program Manager, Academic Support and Enrollment Services. Administrators are available to assist with:
- Department policy questions
- Program requirement clarifications
- Transfer credit/waiver requests
- Applications for graduation
- Program/Concentration change requests
Online student support administrators from the Office of Distance Education are enrolled in your online classes to support you each term and ensure you have a positive online experience. You will receive emails and announcements from your student support administrator throughout your course. They will help with important online course related details such as:
- Course launch
- Final exam administration
- Course evaluations
- Questions about online campus functionality
- Department Faculty & Facilitators
You may view further details about both full time and part time Department faculty as well as course facilitators on the MET Computer Science People page.
Your Course Instructor. Each class will have a designated faculty member which is listed on the MyBU Student. The instructor has the primary responsibility for the course.
Your Facilitator. Our classes are divided into small groups, and each group has its own facilitator. We carefully select and train our facilitators for their expertise in the subject matter and their excellence in teaching. Your facilitator is responsible for stimulating discussions in pedagogically useful areas, for answering your questions, and for grading homework assignments, discussions, term projects, and any manually graded quiz or final-exam questions. If you ask your facilitator a question by email, you should typically get a response within 24 hours, and usually faster. If you need a question answered urgently, post your question to one of the urgent help topics, where everyone can see it and answer it.
