Start Breaking Stories from Day One

Newsroom Quality. Pulitzer Pedigree. Professional Portfolio. Reporters aren’t made in lecture halls alone. At BU you’ll be on deadline from your first semester—writing, shooting, podcasting, and editing for audiences on campus, across Boston, and in national outlets. Graduate with a portfolio and network that screams working journalist—from the No. 2 school for journalism. Are you ready to tell stories that make an impact as a major in journalism?

What Makes BU’s Major in Journalism Different?

Experience a newsroom-first program—file pieces for BU News Service, WTBU Radio, BUTV10, and the Daily Free Press while most first-years elsewhere are still reading stylebooks. You get more opportunities to report here.

How to Get a Job in Journalism

You need a BS in Journalism centered on real reporting to build your portfolio. At BU COM, you’ll work across platforms in a professional newsroom. And you’ll also get classroom training in technical areas to sharpen your craft.

Curriculum Overview

In the Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, you get classwork that focuses on law, ethics, techniques of journalism, and introduction to digital media with an emphasis on reporting, news judgment, writing, and visual skills. Build the skills. Put them into practice.

Then, sample from courses that offer specialized training in investigations, data-driven journalism, photojournalism, and more. A faculty mentor assists you in tailoring individual programs from the many courses available in journalism and across the University.

Student Work Highlights

Choose a Major in Journalism with Real Experience

From the first semester, you’ll report, write, shoot, podcast, and edit in professional campus newsrooms and the award-winning independent Daily Free Press—experience most programs reserved for juniors or seniors. And it all starts in Boston, a top 10 US media market with a globe-spanning press cluster (Boston Globe, WBUR, GBH, and five commercial TV newsrooms).

With a major in journalism, you may collaborate with students at other universities on joint investigations or work with students in other programs as part of the interdisciplinary COMLab. Campus chapters of national news associations, such as the Society of Professional Journalists and National Press Photographers Association, also are active here.

Justice Media Co-Lab is a for-credit, application-only course that pairs journalism majors with Computing & Data Sciences students to produce data-driven investigations for outlets such as the Boston Globe, GBH, ProPublica, MarketWatch, and CBS Boston.
