CISS Awards Two 2026 Book Incubator Grants
CISS and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Arts & Sciences Arianne Chernock are pleased to announce the two recipients of 2026 Book incubator grants. These small grants are designed to support book proposal/manuscript “incubator” workshops. These workshops provide faculty an opportunity to receive feedback on their book proposal or manuscript draft through a day-long or half-day meeting in which key readers gather to provide guidance and suggestions. Congratulations to the two awardees!

Taylor Boas (CAS/Political Science) Breaking the Curse: Policy, Power, and Development in Brazil’s Northeast. This book examines the new approach to development policy funding in Northeastern Brazil, a region known for periodic and often severe droughts, showing that policy change largely succeeded in breaking a longstanding pattern whereby traditional politicians controlled access to drought relief for their own benefit. |

Jonathan Mijs (CAS/Sociology) Why You Don’t Care about Inequality. As inequality has expanded since the 1980s, public concern has stagnated or declined. Why do citizens of an increasingly unequal society remain relatively unconcerned? This is the puzzle at the heart of this book project, which synthesizes a decade of research to show that segregation dulls awareness of structural inequality and instead reinforces meritocratic explanations of success and failure. |
