2011 Freshman Essay Contest Awards
Every year, the Freshman Essay Contest honors first year students who present complex ideas in lucid and persuasive writing. This year the competition was fiercer than ever, with these three essays singled out from among thousands of essays submitted in classes by CGS Freshmen in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Chantell Alford, CGS’11, Earns Admirers On, Off Court

BU alum Garrett Oliver (CGS’81, COM’82) is a leader in the beer world
For Garrett Oliver, brewmaster and one-time aspiring filmmaker, the mental processes behind creating beer and making films are not all that different….The two sides of Oliver’s brain currently work overtime at Brooklyn Brewery, in (where else?) Brooklyn, N.Y. Oliver is both brew-master and vice president of production, and his taste buds and opinions make him a sought-after judge for events like the Great American Beer Festival, the Great British Beer Festival, and the Brewing Industry International Awards. He is a recipient of the highest award given within the U.S. brewing profession, the Brewers Association’s Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewing, and in 2007 he was named by Forbes one of the top 10 taste-makers in the country for wine, beer, and spirits.

At the invitation of the CGS Faculty Development Committee, several outstanding CGS professors discussed inquiry-based assignments they have found effective in generating student engagement and more critical student writing.
CGS Student Human Genome Poster Session
The Students and Faculty of Teams X and Y invited all members of the CGS community to attend their Scientific Poster Session on Friday, December 10, 2010 in the Katzenberg Center. There was a good turnout of students, faculty and staff, and a lively atmosphere on a Friday afternoon.
Professors Peter Busher and Andy Andres organized the poster session, a format widely used in scientific meetings. Thirty-five student groups presented their research on how variations in specific human genes relate to the physical traits that are observed in the human population. The students engaged in discussions about the Human Genome Project, our present genetic knowledge and what every educated citizen should know as our genetic understanding advances.
