This event features Alissa Valles, author of Orphan Fire and Anastylosis, and Karl Kirchwey, author of seven books of poetry, including his most recent publication, Stumbling Blocks: Roman Poems. Conference: Writing, the State, and the Rise of Neo-Nationalism June 30 (London) In January 1868, John William De Forest took to the pages of The Nation with a call that would resound over the next century and a half: the writing of the “Great American Novel.” On the sesquicentennial of De Forest’s essay, CGS hosts an interdisciplinary conference to explore the nation’s shaping of the arts, and the arts’ influence on the narratives of the nation.
