Graduate External Transfer Course Pre-Approval/Approval

Fill out this form if you took courses at another accredited, degree-granting college, or university in the United States and would like us to evaluate your courses to see if they can be approved for BU credit.

This form is used to document equivalency for coursework that has been completed outside of Boston University that is intended for use toward a College of Fine Arts degree. The following is a summary of guidelines:

  • Transfer credit must be taken in an accredited program at an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum grade of B- is required in any course for which a student seeks transfer credit. *This may vary by individual program and/or course.
  • Courses receive no more than the number of credits earned at the host institution, (e.g. if a course is worth 3 semester credits at the outside college or university, it will transfer in as 3 credits to BU; courses taken on a trimester or quarter system will be converted to semester credits accordingly).
  • Courses must carry a minimum of 2.5 Boston University credits, and must be offered by the graduate schools and colleges of Boston University, to be accepted for transfer (or application; PhD students only).
  • During the fall and spring semesters, CFA students may not enroll concurrently at BU and another institution.
  • Students enrolled in the College of Fine Arts should request that an official transcript from the external institution be sent to the CFA Registrar’s office at the following address: 855 Commonwealth Avenue, Suite 230, Boston, MA, 02215
  • All undergraduate transfer policies that are in place for undergrads, are applicable to graduate students.
  • PhD students may use courses previously allowed to fulfill requirements for another program/degree. Please indicate below when/where these courses were taken.
