Xuezhou Zhang joins BU as Assistant Professor in CDS
The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) at Boston University (BU) is proud to welcome Xuezhou (Jack) Zhang as a tenure-track assistant professor. Most recently, Jack was an associate research scholar affiliated with the Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Center for Statistics and Machine Learning at Princeton University.
“Jack Zhang is a wonderful addition to CDS, and we are thrilled that he has decided to join our ranks,” said Professor Azer Bestavros, the Associate Provost for CDS. “His work reflects the focus on innovation that we value at CDS. Through his research on machine learning, he has contributed to many top publications, addressing critical subjects such as online learning, reinforcement learning, and algorithmic game theory.”
In spring of 2022, Zhang served as a visiting scholar in the Learning and Games program at Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing. His recent research has centered on algorithm design and analysis for interactive decision-making systems. He is also interested in designing general-purpose reinforcement learning algorithms demonstrating sample and computational efficiency, robust to noisy or adversarial feedbacks, and handling partial observability and multi-agent communications.
Zhang earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He cites the cross-discipline collaboration encouraged by CDS as one of the things that attracted him to his new position. “I'm particularly drawn to the interdisciplinary role that CDS plays on BU campus and am excited to collaborate with researchers from different areas to apply my expertise to solve problems with high social impact,” he said.
Zhang also anticipates spending lots of time outdoors upon moving to the Boston area. “Outside of research, I'm quite into skiing and looking forward to visiting the mountains on the East Coast,” he said
