Mayank Varia Joins CDS
The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Mayank Varia to associate professor, beginning September 2021.
A former research associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at Boston University, Mayank works in the fields of theoretical and applied cryptography. Specifically, he studies the societal, legal, and public policy impacts of advances in cybersecurity.
Prior to joining BU, he worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, designing and evaluating high performance privacy-enhancing data search technology, creating information theoretic metrics to quantify privacy, and developing algorithms to capture linguistic provenance automatically.
Mayank received his PhD in Mathematics from MIT in 2010. In addition to his faculty role, Mayank is co-director of BU's Center for Reliable Information Systems & Cyber Security, a founding member of the Cyber Security, Law, and Society Alliance, a fellow in the Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy, and a faculty mentor of the Codebreakers outreach program. He also is a member of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Data for Evidence Building and chairs the legal subtask group of the United Nations Privacy Preserving Techniques Task Team.
