I am a first generation college student and a female immigrant from Canada. I grew up in a small, white town in British Columbia and my community was largely conservative. When I made the move to Texas and then to North Carolina, I began to better understand the systemic challenges that BIPOC people face. I also began to recognize the racist ideas and thoughts within myself that I had learned from a young age. I have a lot of work to do, but I am dedicated to putting the time and effort in to be a stronger ally and make the Biology Department, and BU more broadly, a more diverse and inclusive space. My personal priorities on this committee are hiring and retaining BIPOC colleagues at all levels and ensuring our community is a safe space for the diversity of people who are already here.
