The 1839 Society is an exclusive community for Boston University’s most generous philanthropists. Donors are welcomed into the society when they give $1,000 or more in a single fiscal year, with special introductory rates for BU’s young alumni. Society members equip our students with the tools they need to excel and continue to push the University into the future. 1839 Society members are a diverse group of proud Terriers that support BU in a miriad of ways—from academics to athletics, and scholarships to student life on campus. We sat down with Sid Chopra (Questrom’19) to see what the 1839 Society means to him, and what inspired him to give back to BU.

“As a trilingual, third-culture kid, and proud Terrier, my time at Boston University was a remarkable journey filled with growth, exploration, and community-building. I embraced diverse opportunities that allowed me to flourish and create meaningful connections.

Reflecting on my journey at BU, I am immensely grateful for the personal and professional growth I experienced. The university provided me with a platform to explore, learn, and connect with inspiring individuals who have left a lasting impact on my life. As I move forward, I carry with me the valuable networking skills, global perspective, and cherished memories that BU has instilled in me, ready to make a positive difference in the world.”

Can you tell us about the impact that BU had on you?

Boston University had an immense impact on my life. I went in as an introverted and shy individual, but the vibrant and supportive community helped me break free from my shell. Throughout my time at BU, I learned to embrace new opportunities and raise my hand for things that brought me joy. I engaged in various leadership roles and activities that fueled my passion for fostering connections and cultivating impactful experiences. From organizing Questrom’s annual casino night to serving as an orientation leader and international peer mentor, I found joy in bringing people together. This shift in mindset empowered me to become a more confident and enigmatic person. Now, wherever I go, I carry this transformation with me, and it continues to make the biggest difference in my life. BU truly shaped me into the person I am today, and I am forever grateful for the experience.
