September 2021

I wrote to you last year at this time about the challenges of maintaining an effective learning environment in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. That wasn’t easy—in fact, for many of us at BUSSW and across the University, it was one of the toughest challenges of our lives. I will always be proud of the creativity and courage with which our students, faculty, and staff responded.

I am grateful for what gifts from alumni and friends help us do on behalf of our students. The BUSSW Student Emergency Fund allows us to make awards—$200 here, $500 there, along with the occasional $1,000—to students struggling with possible eviction and food insecurity. The Judith Perlstein Field Education and Dean’s Scholarship Funds allow us to grant even more field education stipends and scholarships so students can focus on their studies and practical work, and not the cost of their education. Your gifts make that possible. Thank you.

As the tragic events in our country last year demonstrated, along with the strength of the Black Lives Matter movement, there isn’t a more important time for greater racial and social justice and more social workers in our communities. Thanks to you, the Dean’s Discretionary Fund and the Garriott Fund for Innovation underwrite diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and trainings to educate the next generation of changemakers.

Again, I can’t be more thankful for what our alumni and friends do to help us during this critical time.

As COVID slowly retreats, we at BUSSW are embarking on a new year of work. A new year of changing our communities and making a difference in supporting our amazing students. A gift today—to any of the funds mentioned above or an area meaningful to you—will ensure our success as we work together to build a more just world.

Your generous support, which has such a huge impact here at BUSSW, is deeply appreciated. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, THANK YOU.

Sincerely,
