The College of Engineering is pleased to welcome members of the Class of 2012, and their families, to participate in Commencement 2012!

The College of Engineering Graduation website will be open for eligible seniors in March 2012. If seniors have any questions regarding graduation in general, feel free to email us at engineering@bu.edu.

General information regarding commencement day is noted below for your convenience.

Speakers

Dr. Norman R. Augustine

Norman R. Augustine was raised in Colorado and attended Princeton University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, in aeronautical engineering, magna cum laude, and a Master of Science in Engineering. He joined the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1958 as a research engineer, and later became chief engineer. Beginning in 1965, he served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as assistant director of defense research and engineering.

He joined LTV Missiles and Space Company in 1970 as vice president for advanced programs and marketing. In 1973 he returned to government service as Assistant Secretary of the Army and in 1975 became Under Secretary of the Army, and later Acting Secretary of the Army.

He joined Martin Marietta Corporation in 1977 as vice president of technical operations and became CEO in 1987 and chairman in 1988. He became president of Lockheed Martin upon the formation of that company in 1995, retiring as chairman and CEO in 1997.

Mr. Augustine served for 16 years on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology under Democratic and Republican presidents and led two major reviews of the future of the U.S. space program, in 1990 and 2009. He led a 2005 National Academies of Science commission that produced a landmark report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future.

He has been chairman of the American Red Cross and the National Academy of Engineering, served as president of the Boy Scouts of America and on the boards of Johns Hopkins, MIT, and Princeton, and as a Fellow of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Mr. Augustine has received the National Medal of Technology, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Award, and the Department of Defense's highest civilian decoration, the Distinguished Service Medal.

Yasmin Atefi (MECH)

Yasmin Atefi is receiving her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. At Boston University, Yasmin has been an active member in the College of Engineering, serving as an Orientation Student Advisor as well as EK 100 student advisor. As a member of the Technology Innovation Scholars Program, Yasmin has mentored students at Mount St. Joseph Academy in Brighton, Massachusetts for their FIRST robotics competition, and has also participated in outreach presentations at Boston area middle and high schools. After graduation Yasmin will be working at GE Aviation.

3:00 pm - Reception for graduates & families - Track and Tennis Center

4:00 pm - Line Up for ENG Convocation - Track and Tennis Center

4:30 pm - ENG Convocation for Bachelor's and Master's candidates - Track and Tennis Center

Immediately following the All University Commencement ceremony, there will be a light buffet reception for all College of Engineering students and families at the Track and Tennis Center.

Cap & Gown Info

Everyone who participates in an academic ceremony on Commencement Day is required to wear a cap and gown as approved by the University.

FAQ

Q: How can I order photographs of the event?

A: Commencement Photos Inc. photographs every student who receives a degree on stage during the ceremony. If you do not receive information in the mail by the end of April, feel free to contact them directly via their website at www.commencementphotos.com.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of guests I can bring?

A: No, there is no limit at College of Engineering Ceremony at the Track and Tennis Center. We do require that you let us know how many people you plan to bring to the ceremony, so that we can properly prepare for the event. Eligible seniors must log on to www.bu.edu/eng/graduation to complete the form noting this information by a date to be determined.

Q: Do my guests need tickets?

A: No tickets are required for either ceremony. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: What if I or one of my guests requires handicapped seating or other accomodations?

A : We do need to know you/your guest's requirement in advance. Families should call the Undergraduate Programs Office at 617-353-6447 to discuss their specific needs by May 1st.

Q: Will we have a rehearsal like we did in high school?

A: No, there is no rehearsal for either ceremony.

Q: How early should our guests arrive?

A: For the main ceremony, it is recommended that guests arrive by 12:00 pm. For the College of Engineering ceremony, 3:00 pm.

Q: What is the Baccalaureate Service at Marsh Chapel at 11 am on commencement day?

A: It is the non-denominational religious service for those interested; attendance is not required.

Q: Is it necessary to attend the main ceremony on Nickerson?

A: No, it it not required but strongly encouraged.

Q: Approximately how long is the College of Engineering ceremony?

A: The ceremony lasts approximately an hour and 45 minutes.
