Objectives
The MRI Program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation, which is commercially available, for research and research training. It provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur. In addition, the program provides support to obtain next-generation research instruments by developing instruments with new capabilities that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. An MRI award is expected to enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers and builders.
Proposals submitted to this program fall within 3 Tracks that provide varying levels of financial support and/or are for a specific purpose/aim.
Funding Information
Track 1 – $100,000 – $1.4 milliion
Track 2 – $1.4 – 4 million
Track 3 – $100,000 – 4 million within eligibility criteria described below
Cost sharing requirements are waived for this cycle.
Eligibility
There are no restrictions or limits on who may serve as a PI.
There are no specific restrictions on the kind of equipment requested for Tracks 1 and 2. Track 3 proposals must include the purchase, installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to conserve or reduce the consumption of helium.
Internal Selection Process
BU may forward up to 4 total proposals within the following limits:
- Track 1: up to 2
- Track 2: up to 1
- Track 3: up to 1
Interested applicants should submit the following materials via InfoReady Review by: 4/30/2026
- Instrumentation Proposal Summary (max 2 pages) describing the proposed instrumentation, the need it addresses, its potential impact, and information about where it will be housed and how it will be supported. References are not required but, if necessary, may be included on one additional page
- List of researchers and/or departments who would utilize the proposed instrumentation
- List of collaborators/co-PIs on the proposal
As necessary, the VPR and Office of Research will review internal applications and select institutional applicants.
