Call for Nominations: 2024 Balzan Prize

URL: https://www.balzan.org/en/balzan-prize/subject-areas-and-nominations

OBJECTIVES:

The Balzan Prizes are chosen by the General Prize Committee in two general subject areas: literature, moral sciences, and the arts; and the physical, mathematical, and natural sciences, and medicine.

The four Balzan Prizes, two per category, are awarded to scholars, artists, and scientists who have distinguished themselves in their fields on an international level.

The subject areas in which the awards are granted are rotated, and this special characteristic of the Balzan Prize ensures the promotion and recognition of new or emerging fields of study or research that may have been overlooked by other international awards.

In 2001, the Articles of the Balzan Foundation made a stipulation that prizewinners must destine half of the prize to finance research projects that are carried out by young scholars or scientists.

The 2024 Balzan Prizes will be awarded in the following fields:

  • Restorative Justice
  • History of Modern and Contemporary Science
  • Biological Mechanisms of Ageing
  • Nanoporous Materials for Environmental Applications.

FUNDING INFORMATION:

Each of the four 2024 Balzan Prizes is worth 750,000 Swiss francs.
Half the Prize sum will be awarded to the Prizewinner in recognition of his/her work, while the other half will later be earmarked by the Prizewinner for research projects involving young researchers or research groups. The research proposal will be subject to the approval of the General Prize Committee.

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS:

Prizes may be awarded to individuals or to working teams who have produced results jointly. It is to be
noted that more than one candidate may be nominated for each prize subject. Furthermore, they do not necessarily have to be part of the institution of the individual making the nomination, nor of the same nationality.

INTERNAL SELECTION PROCESS:

  • A statement of reasons (1‐2 pages) for the nomination, including mention of particularly important publications;
