Research on Tap: Genomes in the 21st Century (2022)
Faculty Host: Trevor Siggers, Associate Professor of Biology, College of Arts & Sciences
When the human genome was sequenced two decades ago, some predicted that this would be “biology’s century.” In the years since, our understanding of genetic variation and tools to study it have developed at warp speed. At the same time, many of the ethical and practical implications of how we use genome research remain unanswered.
In this Research on Tap, faculty from across BU will explore what we now know about the genome 20 years after its sequencing, including how genomic differences impact human physiology and disease and how scientists are using comparative genomics to understand human history. Talks will also examine the ethical considerations around new genetic technologies and emerging applications, such as the engineering of the human genome to optimize health. View slides and agenda
