Clarifying BU|BMC Collaborations

Boston University (BU) and Boston Medical Center (BMC) share a unique and longstanding relationship with regards to sponsored research activity but it is also important to remember that BU and BMC are two distinct and separate organizations with:

    • Different DUNS/UEI numbers
    • Different EIN/Tax IDs
    • Different negotiated F&A and Fringe rates
    • Different Annual Audits
    • Different Proposal and Accounting Systems

Faculty who are paid via Boston University are assigned a “home” institution that dictates where they are expected to submit their proposal through when they are a named investigator. To find this information, use the home institution lookup.

We acknowledge that the guidance regarding subcontracts between the institutions has been not been clear or consistently enforced. BU Sponsored Programs and BMC Research Operations wish to provide formal guidance for our research community to follow in order to remove confusion going forward.

Effective for proposals submitted on and after April 15, 2022, there must be a subcontract between BU and BMC when BU and BMC designated investigators collaborate on a proposal and salary is budgeted.

Staff and faculty must use the home institution lookup file, to help make the determination. There will be no change made to existing awards or pending proposals submitted prior to April 15, 2022. To help answer any questions you may have we created scenarios that provide guidance on how they should be handled. If there are additional questions, please contact your BU or BMC Pre Award RA so we may help make the determination and add to this guidance.
