Research Priorities in the Time of COVID, with Matthew Fenton, Division of Extramural Activities, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (2021)
Dr. Matthew Fenton, Director, Division of Extramural Activities, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), will provide an update on NIAID’s current and future research priorities in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Topics covered will include the FY21 budget for the National Institutes of Health, COVID-related grant policies and flexibilities, the NIAID response to COVID (including Operation Warp Speed and the COVID-19 vaccine trials), and future COVID initiatives.

About the Speaker
Dr. Matthew Fenton, Ph.D., serves as director of the Division of Extramural Activities (DEA), NIAID. Dr. Fenton oversees the management of grants, contracts, peer review, training and career development, Small Business Innovation Research programs, and extramural policies for the Institute.
Dr. Fenton joined NIAID as the chief of the Allergy, Asthma and Airway Biology Branch in the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation in June 2005. Before joining NIAID, Dr. Fenton was a Professor of Medicine, Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore from 2003 to 2005, and a Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the Boston University School of Medicine from 1988 to 2003. His research focused on the role of innate immunity in inflammatory and bacterial infectious diseases.
Dr. Fenton has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He is a past Section Editor of the The Journal of Immunology, Past President of the International Cytokine Society, and Past President of the Society for Leukocyte Biology. In 2006, Dr. Fenton was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
