David Carballo

Assistant Provost for General Education

David Carballo was appointed BU’s Assistant Provost for General Education in September 2019. Working in close consultation with the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, he provides leadership for the BU Hub, BU’s University-wide general education program for undergraduate students, fostering further curricular development to fulfill the Hub’s potential, guiding evolution of the Hub by leading the groups responsible for its evaluation and review, and collaborating with faculty and staff across the University.

David co-chairs the General Education Committee of the University Council and serves as chair of the BU Hub Council, the faculty committee charged with the Hub’s ongoing assessment and with making adjustments to its requirements, outcomes, and policies. He additionally oversees the Managing Director of the BU Hub and the Faculty Director of the Cross-College Challenge and works collaboratively with the Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Affairs to help ensure excellent advising for the Hub.

David is a Professor of Archaeology, Anthropology, and Latin American Studies in the College of Arts & Sciences. He is an archaeologist who studies the cultures of the Precolumbian Americas, specializing particularly in topics of urbanism, households, and religion in early central Mexico. David came to BU in 2010, and has served as Director of the Archaeology Program and on the Executive Committee of the Center for Latin American Studies.  He earned his MA and PhD in anthropology from UCLA, his BA in political science from Colgate University, and has been a Visiting Scholar at the Center for US-Mexico Studies at UC San Diego and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard.
