Scheduling of Final Exams and Accommodations for Illness or Quarantine

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

As we approach the end of the semester and the final exam period, I want to thank all of you for your continued dedication, particularly as we’ve done the challenging work of safely bringing students back to the classrooms. I am very appreciative for all you’ve done to lead us through this semester and hope that you can enjoy a restful winter break in just a few weeks.

While the incidence of illness on campus remains very low, I ask that all faculty administering final exams please be understanding and accommodating in the event you have students who are ill or need to quarantine during a scheduled final exam due to contact with someone testing positive for COVID-19. This may include rescheduling an individual student’s exam or arranging for an alternative testing option. Students and faculty are also encouraged to work with their school/college’s academic continuity coordinator who can support them in making arrangements or addressing concerns.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone that, per University policy, the final examination for a course must be given only during its scheduled exam period and not during a regular class meeting or on a reading day, even if the faculty member and all students in a course agree to such a change. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that our students have the appropriate time and space to prepare for finals during the designated study period. For further information regarding the scheduling of final exams, please see the website of the University registrar.

Thank you for your cooperation with this effort, and best wishes to everyone for a healthy and successful conclusion to the fall semester.
