Director, Kilachand Honors College – Call for Nominations and Applications

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer
and Dr. Beth Loizeaux, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs

The Office of the Provost invites nominations and applications from the BU professoriate for the position of Director of the Kilachand Honors College. The Director provides leadership for all aspects of this innovative, interdisciplinary 4-year program for nearly 400 of Boston University’s top undergraduates. The Director of the Kilachand Honors Program also holds the Arvind and Chandan Nandlal Kilachand Professorship, a reflection of the exceptional leadership and high standard of scholarship, research or creative activity the incumbent brings to the position. The Director reports to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs.

Kilachand Honors College was founded in 2011 and provides students a challenging program grounded in the processes of exploration and discovery, combining curricular with co-curricular education in a residential community setting in Kilachand Hall. Students enroll in the Kilachand Honors College as well as in a degree program in one of the undergraduate schools or colleges. The Kilachand program is designed to encourage students to explore new fields and new ways of thinking as integral parts of their degrees. Within the context of a large, urban research university, Kilachand offers students experiences that are typically associated with features of a small college. These include frequent, informal interaction with faculty and staff whose offices are in Kilachand Hall and an intellectual community of students outside the classroom who take the same courses.

The next Director of the Kilachand Honors College will have the opportunity to lead the future development of the College. By exercising intellectual leadership and collaborative problem solving in an environment of shared decision-making, the Director will:

  • Build on the College’s tremendous success in recruiting top students into a rigorous program and creating a close-knit community;
  • Advance the integration of Kilachand into students’ educational experiences in their degree-granting schools and colleges; and
  • Further develop Kilachand as a valuable resource for the Boston University community.

Primary responsibilities of the Director include intellectual direction for the College and oversight of all aspects of the program, including: admissions and recruitment, curriculum and co-curriculum development, collaboration with the schools and colleges in the selection of faculty, advising of students, managing and developing staff, and budget development and oversight.

Competitive candidates will have:

  • Excellent scholarly credentials;
  • A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education;
  • Experience in a significant administrative role that includes budgetary oversight;
  • Expertise designing innovative courses or curricula;
  • The ability to articulate a compelling vision for Kilachand Honors College to both prospective students and parents and to the BU community;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different academic fields and with administrative units around the University; and
  • A commitment to creating and sustaining a vibrant, diverse community of students, staff, and faculty.

Candidates must be associate or full professors, with preference for the latter. The appointment is a full-time, 12-month, 3-year renewable term, beginning January 1, 2017. Applications should include a c.v.; a letter of application addressing the candidate’s interest in and qualifications for the position; and names, email addresses, and phone numbers of at least three references.

Please submit nominations and applications to Ashley Sampson in the Office of the Provost (asampson@bu.edu). For best consideration, all application materials must be received by June 1, 2016. Confidential review of applications will begin June 6, 2016, and will continue until the position is filled.

For inquiries about the position, please contact Beth Loizeaux, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs (ebloiz@bu.edu).
