Abstract: Why does the central state shaped by Buddhist nationalism, become an enemy of ethnic and religious minorities in Highland Southeast Asia (Zomia)? In what ways do decentralized resistance movements across Southeast Asia’s villages and valleys—particularly in Myanmar—challenge the power of this central state? And how might we reimagine a new nation that moves beyond nationalism? The speaker will share his firsthand experiences and academic expertise on the identity politics of Buddhist nationalism, decentralized and interreligious resistance, ethnic reconciliation, and the democratic vision.
