Are you a College of Communication master’s student planning to take more than 16 units in a semester?

For most College of Communication master’s programs, a typical full-time course load is 16 units per semester. Enrollment in more than 16 units in a single semester is considered an overload.

If you plan to enroll in more than 16 units, you have two options:

  • Pay the additional per-unit tuition. No overload tuition waiver form is required.
  • Request an overload tuition waiver to enroll in additional units without incurring additional tuition charges. To request a waiver, complete the form below.

Before requesting an overload tuition waiver, review the total number of units required to complete your degree in the University Bulletin.

Overload tuition waiver eligibility

Please note:

  • Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA to be eligible for an overload tuition waiver.
  • Students are not recommended to enroll in more than 20 units in a single semester.
  • Submission of an overload tuition waiver request does not guarantee approval.

Graduate tuition and per-unit charges

Visit the tuition page for current rates and additional information.

  • Tuition is charged at the published COM graduate per-unit rate for the applicable academic year.
  • Students are billed for every registered unit each semester.
  • Enrollment in any course–including a required course, elective, internship, directed study, thesis, or continuation, results in a per-unit tuition charge unless an approved tuition waiver or other applicable exception applies.
