Hollywood Reporter lists COM among top film schools

The Hollywood Reporter named Boston University’s film and television program at the College of Communication among the world’s best in its annual rankings, out Friday.

“We’re honored to be recognized once again by The Hollywood Reporter,” said Craig H. Shepherd, chair of the department of film and television. “We believe this ranking reflects the growing recognition across the industry that Boston University is preparing the next generation of filmmakers and storytellers for an entertainment landscape that is constantly evolving.

“Our focus has always been on combining creative excellence with hands-on, industry-relevant experiences, and it’s gratifying to see those efforts recognized,” he added.

In its story, The Hollywood Reporter cited accomplishments by COM alumni, including Josh Safdie (COM’07), director of Marty Supreme; Benny Safdie (COM’08), director of The Smashing Machine; Marissa McMahon (COM’95), producer of Train Dreams; and Jane Schoenbrun (COM’09), whose latest film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The list also noted COM’s hiring of new positions focused on vertical filmmaking, an area of growth in the industry, its new production studio at 808 Commonwealth Avenue, and its pool of $100,000 in production funds for student projects.
