Editor’s Confidential Panel on Thursday December 11. Save the Date!

Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals is an essential component of a successful academic career. On Thursday December 11, 2025 from 1-2:30 pm, a panel of editors of prominent social sciences journals will share insights and advice for how to successfully navigate the peer-review process. The editors will discuss topics including: selecting a target journal, writing a successful manuscript, doing an effective revision, how reviewers are chosen, and the reasons why papers are rejected. The presentation will be followed by audience Q&A.

Panelists are:

Elizabeth F. Cohen is Political Theory editor of the American Journal of Political Science. AJPS is the flagship journal of the Midwest Political Science Association, and focuses on citizenship, governance, and politics, and the public value of political science research. Dr. Cohen is the Maxwell Professor of United States Citizenship in the Department of Political Science at Boston University. She is the author of four books, and her scholarly articles and reviews have appeared in venues such as Ethics in International Affairs, Citizenship StudiesPerspectives on PoliticsPolity, Ethics, and the Duke Journal of Constitutional Law and Public Policy.

Alya Guseva is co-Chief Editor of Socio-Economic-Review (SER). She is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Sociology department, and author of Into the Red: The Birth of the Credit Card Market in Postcommunist Russia (2008). SER is the flagship journal of Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE). The journal promotes interdisciplinary dialogue between sociology, economics, political science and moral philosophy, through both empirical and theoretical work.

Kevin Lang was editor-in-chief of Journal of Labor Economics (JOLE) from 201-2023. He is the Laurence A. Bloom Professor of Economics.  JOLE is the flagship journal of the Society of Labor Economists. The journal publishes international research on issues affecting social and private behavior, and the economy including supply and demand of labor services, personnel economics, distribution of income, unions and collective bargaining, applied and policy issues, and labor markets and demographics.

Zachary Rossetti is editor-in-chief of Journal of Education. As the oldest educational publication in the country, the Journal  disseminates knowledge that informs practice in PK-12 and higher education. Dr. Rossetti is an associate professor of special education at BU Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. His research focuses on social inclusion and belonging of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The session will be co-moderated by Deborah Carr (CISS director) and Arianne Chernock (Associate Dean of the Faculty/Social Sciences). Dr. Carr is the editor-in-chief of Journal of Health and Social Behavior, the medical sociology journal of the American Sociological Association. She previously served as editor-in-chief of Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences (2015-20), deputy editor of Journal of Marriage & Family (2005-08; 2011-14), and Social Psychology Quarterly (2011-13). She is an A&S distinguished professor of sociology and director of the Center for Innovation in Social Science. Dr. Chernock is a Professor of History. Her research focuses on modern British and European history, with an emphasis on gender, culture, politics, and the monarchy. Her books include Men and the Making of Modern British Feminism (Stanford University Press, 2010), the edited collection Women, Gender and Enlightenment (Palgrave, 2005), The Right to Rule and the Rights of Women: Queen Victoria and the Women’s Movement (Cambridge University Press, 2019) Chernock’s research has been supported by grants from the Fulbright Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, Phi Beta Kappa,
